I'm watching, very sympathetically, from the sidelines of the Occupy Wall Street protests. I had never belonged to a union before becoming a teacher. Now I'm a member of the biggest union there is. My friend David Justice has just published some critical advice to the young protesters.
New York has been the source of important youth movements before. The story of the famous Newsies Strike of 1899 was turned into what I personally think was a terrific Disney musical, Newsies. My first job was as a paperboy, and I applaud the bravery those young kids showed, standing up to the authorities of their day and demanding justice.
So, Occupy Wall Street. Carpe Diem. Seize the Day.
